Scotland Sees 2,000% Spike in Crypto Crime Since 2019

A recent report from Scotland’s Police highlights a significant increase in cryptocurrency-related crime since 2019. The report, submitted to the Scottish Police Authority’s Policing Performance Committee, reveals a dramatic surge of crypto crimes, with numbers rising by a staggering 2,000%. This increase poses new challenges for law enforcement as they grapple with combating digital fraud and cybercrime involving cryptocurrencies. While technological advancements in forensic investigation have emerged, Scotland still lacks dedicated cryptocurrency crime units. To address this gap, plans are underway to establish a dedicated cyber and fraud command unit. This initiative aims to enhance Scotland’s ability to investigate and prosecute digital crimes, despite the rapid evolution of cybercrime still requiring further investment to strengthen law enforcement capacity.
