The Nigerian government’s 2024 digital safety report has revealed a significant deletion of social media accounts across various platforms. The report, part of the federal government’s effort to protect Nigerians from harmful content online, showed over 13 million accounts were deactivated during this period. The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) issued a statement confirming this data, citing compliance with the Code of Practice for Interactive Computer Service Platforms/Internet Intermediaries as the driving force behind these actions. The report highlighted Google, Microsoft, TikTok, and X (formerly Twitter) as compliant entities, emphasizing their role in addressing user safety concerns through the provided Code of Practice and community guidelines.
