UK police are actively investigating a sophisticated scam that led to the theft of £2.1 million worth of Bitcoin from a victim, highlighting a worrying trend targeting long-term cryptocurrency holders who utilize cold storage wallets. North Wales Police, who is handling the investigation, has labeled this case as “highly targeted and advanced.” The victim was contacted by a scammer posing as a senior UK law enforcement officer, leading them to believe that their identification documents were compromised. The scammer then convinced the victim to access their crypto cold wallet using a link provided by the impersonator. This ultimately resulted in the perpetrator gaining full control of the victim’s funds and withdrawing $2.8 million worth of Bitcoin.
