Banker Loses $1.2 Billion in Ethereum After Key Loss

Estonia-based banker, Lõhmus, disclosed a significant loss of 250,000 ETH he acquired during Ethereum’s 2014 presale, according to an interview with Estonia’s public radio. In this interview, he revealed his inability to recover the assets due to losing access to the wallet keys. Coinbase product director Conor Grogan later identified a matching wallet address attributed to him. The current market value of the lost ETH is estimated at $1.2 billion. Arkham Intelligence blockchain data reveals minimal transactions from the wallet, further emphasizing its current status. Lõhmus has previously cautioned that while decentralization offers freedom, it also brings irreversible risks associated with losing access to digital assets, a lesson learned after misplacing a small Bitcoin investment years earlier. This incident highlights the recurring challenges of lost keys and inaccessible crypto accounts, impacting countless fortunes across the cryptocurrency landscape.
