Temidayo Oniosun’s journey began with a climate-driven problem. While studying Meteorology at the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), he witnessed firsthand the lack of accurate ground data hindering climate research and action in Africa. Fueled by this observation, he established Climate in Africa, an organization addressing this critical gap by providing high-quality, accessible ground data for African climate challenges. Nigeria faces significant climate-related issues from recurring floods in Lagos to the expanding desertification in the North. Climate in Africa’s mission is clear: to bridge the accuracy gap between satellite and local ground data, empowering decision-making for a more sustainable future. Nigeria has limited resources for climate monitoring devices, but Climate in Africa is addressing this by developing and manufacturing affordable hardware locally in Lagos. This strategy empowers local communities while ensuring access to reliable weather and air quality information. The company’s impact extends beyond device production, as they collaborate with organizations like the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) to deploy their devices for air quality monitoring across the state. LASEPA utilizes these datasets to enforce environmental regulations, enhance public awareness, and improve overall air quality in Lagos. Climate in Africa’s success relies on its collaboration with government agencies like LASEPA. As a testament to their commitment to climate-driven solutions, the company has received significant support from the Lagos State Government, who became their first customer, further demonstrating the importance of local partnerships for achieving impactful change.
