This latest milestone was recorded on August 12, with the Treasury Department reporting a total national debt of $37,004,817,625,842 by late afternoon that day. Maya MacGuineas, chair of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, highlighted the severity of the U.S.’s fiscal situation, noting that Congress’s policies are further contributing to the imbalance.
