Louisiana Enacts Bill Banning Election Betting

Louisiana has taken a major step in curbing election betting with the introduction of a new bill. Senate Bill 90, authored by Senator Rick Edwards, seeks to prohibit any activity related to political election bets. This would include accepting and placing wagers on any elections. The bill’s language is detailed: “No person shall knowingly, willfully, or intentionally participate in any bet or wager that is based upon any contingency whatsoever that arises from an election”. 2023 saw Louisiana legalize online sports betting. While it remains unclear how this new legislation might affect existing online platforms and their operations, the bill’s intent to prohibit any form of betting on elections will certainly have implications for the state’s economy.
