Congress Attempts to Halt Central Bank Digital Currency Proposal

The U.S. House of Representatives’ Financial Services Committee has approved a bill seeking to block the launch of a central bank digital currency (CBDC). The proposed legislation, spearheaded by Rep. Tom Emmer, would prohibit the Federal Reserve from issuing its own digital currency. The committee voted 27 to 22 in favor of this measure, which will now be presented for discussion in the full House. The bill aims to prevent banks affiliated with the U.S. Federal Reserve from issuing a digital currency. This action seeks to prevent a centralized digital currency from being used as a tool for government surveillance.
