Ripple Pilots RLUSD for Drought Relief in Kenya

Ripple has initiated a pilot project that will utilize its stablecoin, Ripple USD (RLUSD), for drought relief in Kenya. This initiative comes on the heels of Ripple’s recent integration of RLUSD into its payments platform. The partnership with Mercy Corps Ventures and DIVA Donate, a platform utilizing decentralized finance technology to facilitate donations, will leverage blockchain technology to provide financial aid via RLUSD to affected pastoralists. 🛡️ Ripple’s aim is to accelerate the impact of its cross-border payment solutions through this program. 📈 The use of stablecoins seeks to enhance transparency and expedite settlements while enabling access for underbanked populations. 💰 The pilot program aims to demonstrate how blockchain and stablecoins can improve aid delivery and insurance, particularly in Kenya’s challenging drought conditions. It will be conducted on the Ethereum network. 🌐 RLUSD donations will be open to the public, accessible via connected wallets, with smart contracts ensuring secure fund holding before automatic payouts upon satellite-detected drought triggers. The pilot is slated to begin in May 2025 and may reach up to 533 pastoralists in Laikipia County. Ripple intends to publish its findings later this summer. Participants can withdraw their RLUSD or redirect funds for future campaigns.
