T-Mobile, a subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom, has begun distributing over $350 million in settlement funds to millions of customers impacted by a significant data breach in 2021. This cyberattack exposed personal information for around 76 million U.S. consumers, including names, addresses, and social security numbers. The settlement agreement, reached in July 2022, offers compensation ranging from $25 to $100 per claim, with some individuals receiving as much as $25,000 for documented significant losses. Furthermore, affected customers receive two years of free identity protection services. T-Mobile emphasizes that it has reinforced its cybersecurity measures to deter future incidents, though the settlement doesn’t involve an admission of fault. Earlier this year, T-Mobile faced a separate legal case related to cryptocurrency theft stemming from SIM card attacks, resulting in a $33 million payment penalty.
