UK Opens Doors to Crypto Investment for Individual Investors

The UK financial regulator, the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), has taken a significant step forward by allowing individual investors access to crypto-backed exchange-traded notes (cETNs). This move marks a new era for cryptocurrency in the UK, as cETNs will now be offered to both professional and retail investors on FCA-approved exchanges (RIEs). The ban on individual access to crypto derivatives products remains in place. However, similar products are already available in other countries. The FCA maintains it will continue its monitoring of market developments. David Geale, the FCA’s executive director for payments systems and digital assets, emphasized that this consultation demonstrates the UK’s commitment to fostering a flourishing cryptocurrency industry while balancing risk. The new regulation entails applying existing financial promotion rules to ensure investors are adequately informed about risks and prevented from receiving inappropriate incentives. *This is not investment advice.*
