European Union Sets 2026 Deadline for DeFi Regulation

The European Union is preparing to introduce regulations for decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols starting in mid-2026, despite uncertainty surrounding the very definition of decentralization. This regulatory framework, currently in its final implementation phase, aims to enhance investor protection and tackle fraud in the crypto market, but leaves DeFi’s future shrouded in ambiguity. The Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA), which went into effect on December 30, 2024, focuses primarily on these objectives. However, it leaves decentralized protocols untouched, creating confusion for developers and users alike.
