European Parliament Set to Vote on Blockchain Infrastructure Tech Sovereignty Proposal This July

The European Parliament is set to vote in July on a non-binding technology sovereignty proposal, which aims to strengthen Europe’s position in digital ecosystems amidst increasing global competition. The proposal, backed by pro-Bitcoin lawmaker Sarah Knafo, seeks to address concerns over foreign control of crucial technologies like cloud computing, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and communication infrastructure. Knafo’s advocacy comes as the ITRE committee, responsible for drafting policy on industry matters, has issued a report recommending investment in private innovation while promoting energy-efficient computing and blockchain infrastructure. 720 European lawmakers will decide on this framework, with right-wing parties expected to support the text. While the proposal remains non-binding, it serves as political guidance for future legislation.
