European Parliament Set to Vote on Tech Sovereignty Proposal in July

The European Parliament is poised to vote on a technology sovereignty proposal submitted by the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE) under the leadership of pro-Bitcoin lawmaker Sarah Knafo. The ITRE adopted a non-binding report on tech sovereignty and digital infrastructure, highlighting Europe’s lagging position in strategic sectors like cloud computing, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, semiconductors, and communication infrastructure. The proposal calls for a European policy framework to support the digital ecosystem. 720 lawmakers will vote in July. Knafo, who spearheaded this initiative, expects the proposed legislation will receive favorable consideration from right-leaning parties. However, left-wing parties may present pressure to block it. The report serves as a political guide rather than a legally binding document.
