Valve’s Starfish Launches Miniaturized Brain Chip, Aiming for Reduced Surgical Impact

Gabe Newell’s startup, Starfish Neuroscience, is set to release a new brain chip this year, aiming to revolutionize neurological treatment. The company boasts that its customized electrophysiology chip will interact with multiple brain regions simultaneously, enabling the recording and writing of information directly from the brain for potential use in treating neurological disorders. 2025 marks the projected arrival of the first batch of these chips. Starfish differentiates itself by emphasizing its miniaturization, offering a much smaller chip than current options which are bulky and power-hungry. This new chip will be only 2x4mm in size with a 0.3mm pitch BGA package and operate at an ultra-low power level (1.1mW). The company’s ambition is to minimize surgical impact by reducing the need for larger and more invasive implants.
