A sophisticated impersonation scam targeting retired artist Ed Suman has resulted in the theft of over $2 million worth of Bitcoin and Ether. According to Bloomberg, Suman fell victim to a scheme orchestrated by individuals posing as Coinbase representatives, who successfully accessed his funds despite him storing his assets offline in a hardware wallet. The perpetrators tricked Suman into entering his seed phrase on a fake website mimicking Coinbase’s interface, leading to the loss of 17.5 Bitcoin and 225 Ether from his account. This incident highlights a growing vulnerability in cryptocurrency exchanges to social engineering attacks following a recent customer support breach that exposed sensitive user data.
