Alabama Man Sentenced for Role in SEC Account Hacking

An Alabama man has been sentenced to 14 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. The sentence stems from his involvement in the hacking of the Securities and Exchange Commission’s X account that took place in January 2024. The hackers used the compromised account to send a tweet falsely claiming approval for a Bitcoin ETF, resulting in a temporary price surge of over $1,000 in Bitcoin.
