A recent data breach involving Coinbase has impacted not only its users but also individuals associated with the venture capital firm Sequoia Capital. According to a Bloomberg report published May 16th, Sequoia Capital Managing Partner Roelof Botha experienced personal information theft after cybercriminals bribed Coinbase support agents for access to user data. While Mr. Botha’s exact net worth is not public knowledge, he is estimated to have amassed hundreds of millions in assets. The breach was revealed by Coinbase in a blog post on May 15th, stating that social engineering attacks were targeted at some users who had their personal account information compromised. Despite the group’s attempt to extort $20 million from Coinbase for non-disclosure, the exchange rejected the demands. The scope of the breach remains uncertain, but similar tactics have been reported impacting users at Kraken and Binance as well, though neither has yet responded. This is an ongoing story with updates to follow.
