Sei Aims for Streamlined Network Architecture by Shifting to EVM-Only

The Sei blockchain has unveiled a proposal to optimize its architecture and focus solely on Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) technology. This shift, outlined in the Sei Improvement Proposal (SIP)-3, seeks to simplify network operations and attract DeFi developers.  The project aims to deprecate support for CosmWasm and native Cosmos accounts, effectively transitioning to an EVM-only model. This change was prompted by the increasing complexity introduced by the initial dual architecture that included both EVM and Cosmos accounts.   The initiative is aimed at improving user experience and network efficiency. Sei’s decision comes after seeing over 80% of transactions on its network originate from EVM addresses since August, indicating the dominance of this model in activity. This proposal outlines a three-phase upgrade process: first, EVM pointers will be developed to allow access to Cosmos and CosmWasm assets from the EVM side; next, all new CosmWasm deployments will be deprecated, along with legacy CosmWasm contracts and transaction support for non-EVM addresses. Finally, only EVM addresses will initiate transactions going forward. To mitigate potential disruptions, Sei Labs has outlined a phased approach to the upgrade, allowing for time to migrate assets, and ensure smooth integration of existing infrastructure.
