Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin proposes a multi-year roadmap to streamline the protocol’s foundation layer (L1) by reducing complexity and enhancing scalability, security, and long-term resilience. His plan aims to create a more efficient and easier-to-manage Ethereum architecture by simplifying its execution engine and standardization of core components. Buterin’s proposal calls for replacing Ethereum’s EVM with RISC-V as the execution engine, aiming for a 100x performance improvement and eliminating precompiles. Standardization of erasure codes, serialization, and tree structures will also contribute to a unified, streamlined Ethereum architecture. This effort aims to reduce maintenance costs and lower security risks while fostering broader participation.
