LAPD Recovers $2.7 Million Stolen Bitcoin Mining Equipment from Airport Heist

The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) has recovered over $2.7 million in bitcoin mining equipment stolen during a heist at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). LAPD officials arrested Oscar David Borrero-Manchola and Yonaiker Rafael Martinez-Ramos, both members of a South American crime ring suspected of stealing and selling stolen goods throughout the city. Authorities discovered the stolen equipment, including over $4 million worth of goods, hidden in storage units across San Fernando Valley. The LAPD seized this gear following an investigation into the theft and sale of stolen goods. Investigations are ongoing with additional arrests possible. The value of a typical bitcoin mining rig ranges from $3,000 to over $5,000. This case is not the first: The LAPD previously recovered stolen Bitcoin mining rigs worth $579,000 in July 2023 and has even uncovered similar thefts in Iceland and China.
