Seniors Fall Victim to Crypto Scams: FBI Report Reveals Spike in 2024

The FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) has released its annual report for 2024, revealing a concerning trend: a surge in cryptocurrency-related scams targeting senior citizens in the United States. The report indicates that those aged 60 and above filed over 33,000 complaints about such scams, resulting in significant financial losses of $2.84 billion. This figure accounts for nearly 30% of the total $9.3 billion lost to cryptocurrency fraud across the year. The IC3 received a substantial influx of complaints about cryptocurrency – totaling 149,686 reports – representing a notable 66% increase from the previous year. Notably, investment scams and crypto ATM fraud were identified as primary methods employed by perpetrators, with losses reaching $5.8 billion and $247 million respectively.
