Amid its ongoing antitrust case with the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), ChatGPT developer OpenAI has expressed interest in acquiring Google’s Chrome browser. The DOJ believes that allowing Google to continue monopolizing the online search market and related advertising would stifle competition. If Google’s Chrome is made available for sale, OpenAI sees an opportunity to create a more user-friendly AI-powered browsing experience. 2023 saw OpenAI CEO Nick Turley assert that acquiring Chrome would allow OpenAI to offer an exceptional browsing experience and showcase how an AI-driven browser works. This stance was put forward during the ongoing trial, where OpenAI’s chief presented his thoughts on the potential acquisition to the court. The DOJ is seeking to force Google to divest Chrome due to concerns over its monopoly in the online search market. During a hearing last week, Google’s executive Peter Fitzgerald countered this claim by stating that their exclusive agreements with manufacturers for their search engine were not restrictions on installing other AI products.
