A recent report from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) unveils a concerning trend: global organized crime is utilizing cryptocurrencies to commit increasingly sophisticated crimes. The report, titled ‘Inflection Point: Global Implications of Scam Centres, Underground Banking and Illicit Online Marketplaces in Southeast Asia,’ highlights how criminals, including terrorists, are leveraging crypto for malicious activities. The report reveals that transnational criminal groups primarily originate from East and Southeast Asian regions. However, they target vulnerable nations with weak regulatory oversight, such as Nigeria, Zambia, Tonga, and even the Middle East. After committing their crimes, these perpetrators utilize illegal crypto mining as a powerful tool to launder vast sums of money siphoned through illicit operations.
