Pavel Durov Denies EU Influence on Telegram’s Compliance

Telegram founder Pavel Durov refutes French media reports claiming his detention in France last year was meant to force the messaging platform to comply with European Union regulations. Durov refuted these claims, calling them “blatant misinformation,” and asserts that Telegram has been fully compliant with EU law long before the incident. The allegations arose from a recent French report suggesting the arrest of Durov had finally pushed Telegram to adhere to the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA). “This is wrong,” Durov wrote, emphasizing his point: “Telegram has always been compliant with EU law.” He further clarified that it was French police who began following proper legal protocols under the DSA after August 2023. He added that since then, law enforcement requests submitted through established legal channels have enabled French courts to access IP addresses of suspected criminals using Telegram. Durov emphasizes Telegram’s dedication to legal compliance globally with millions invested annually and its proactive approach in preparing for future changes.
