UK Minister’s Account Used to Promote Cryptocurrency Scam

United Kingdom Minister Lucy Maria Powell’s X (formerly Twitter) account was compromised to promote a cryptocurrency scam called ‘House of Commons’. The now-deleted post described the $HCC coin as a “community-driven digital currency bringing people’s power to the blockchain”. 70,000 followers on X, Powell has nearly 34,000 followers. She currently serves as MP for Manchester Central and has been a leader of the House of Commons since Labour won power last year. Her role involves planning and supervising the government’s legislative program while also upholding the rights of backbench MPs. The hack was confirmed by Powell’s office on Tuesday morning, with steps taken to secure the account and remove misleading posts. 34 transactions have been recorded, with a profit estimated at about £225. The use of compromised accounts for promoting scam crypto coins is a growing trend. This follows similar examples of high-profile figures like Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, Bill Gates, Joe Biden, and Barack Obama being targeted by hackers on Twitter (now X) in 2020. These individuals were asked to donate cryptocurrency. Notably, Action Fraud reported a surge in cybercrime attacks targeting social media accounts in 2024, urging users to take steps like using two-factor authentication for extra security. UK Parliament emphasizes the importance of online security and provides advice to its members on managing their digital safety; however, they don’t comment on specific details of their cybersecurity policies. The use of hacked accounts to promote scams highlights a growing threat in social media security.
