Indonesia Grapples with Rp 7.9 Trillion Digital Scam Crisis Fueled by AI-Driven Fraud

Indonesia is facing a surge in digital scams, resulting in public losses exceeding Rp 7.9 trillion (US$474 million) between November 2024 and November 2025, according to the Financial Services Authority (OJK). This rapid growth coincides with the increasing adoption of digital technologies and sophisticated criminal tactics. The scale of attempted fraud is unprecedented: seven out of ten Indonesians encounter scams each week, while 23% reported losses from real-time payment scams in 2024. 💰 💸 The most significant losses are attributed to online lending fraud (average loss: Rp 8.5 million) and impersonation scams (reaching Rp 1.31 trillion). However, victims often report incidents only after a delay of one hour, enabling criminals to move stolen funds before freezing.
