SARB Holds Back on Retail CBDCs in South Africa, Focuses on Modernizing Payment Systems

The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) has concluded that while a consumer-facing central bank digital currency (CBDC) is technically possible and could support long-term innovation, there’s no immediate need to introduce one. Instead, the SARB plans to prioritize modernizing the country’s national payment system for faster financial inclusion and efficiency improvements.
