Tether Holdings Ltd., facing economic pressures, has announced the discontinuation of its operations in Uruguay. This decision led to job losses for 30 out of 38 employees. The company had planned a substantial investment, including the construction of three data processing centers in Florida and Tacuarembó provinces, with an estimated power consumption of 165 megawatts. A further $100 million was allocated to infrastructure development. Tether also aimed to establish a wind and solar power park with a capacity of 300 megawatts, but its operations have been halted due to ongoing economic challenges. The company cites the 31.5-kilovolt transmission contract model as a contributing factor to increased costs, despite Tether’s efforts to secure more competitive electricity rates since November 2023. The proposed shift to a 150-kilovolt transmission fee and revised power purchase contracts could have brought significant economic benefits for Uruguay’s state power company UTE but were not implemented.
