China’s Bitcoin Hashrate Climbs Back to Top 3, Despite Ongoing Mining Ban

Despite a nationwide ban on cryptocurrency mining introduced in 2021, China has witnessed a resurgence of its Bitcoin mining activity. New data from Hashrate Index reveals that the country now accounts for over 14% of the global Bitcoin hashrate, exceeding it’s pre-ban dominance in 2025, according to Reuters reports. This climb positions China as the third largest Bitcoin mining power globally, primarily driven by cheap electricity and expanding data centers across energy-rich provinces.
