Chinese messaging giant WeChat has issued a warning regarding fraudulent activity within its group chat platform, following reports from concerned users. The platform has identified instances of pyramid schemes and scams, where perpetrators utilize deceptive tactics such as falsely promising unfreezing of national assets, citing government policies, and marketing blockchain-based virtual currencies and stablecoins to unsuspecting individuals. These schemes prey on users’ financial vulnerabilities by enticing them to join groups, leading to the recruitment of others through sharing suspicious links for fraudulent applications, participation in daily check-ins and meetings designed to manipulate and ultimately defraud participants. These activities pose a serious threat to user safety and security.
