UK Enacts Tougher Cyber Regulations for Tech Firms

The UK government has introduced a new law designed to enhance cybersecurity across its technology industry, with stricter rules aimed at mitigating cyber threats. The Cybersecurity and Resilience bill expands existing network security regulations to encompass more tech and service providers, holding these firms accountable for network and data protection. Noncompliance carries penalties based on annual turnover.

This legislation targets artificial intelligence misuse by requiring trusted organizations to test AI models for vulnerabilities before harmful content can be generated. It will also strengthen protections against state-sponsored cyberattacks through alignment with EU standards.

The bill aims to bolster the UK’s defenses against cyber threats, safeguarding businesses, public services, and citizens. The government has estimated that a single serious cyberattack could cost an average of £190,000 in the UK – totaling approximately £14.7 billion annually.
