Advocacy Groups Call on Trump to Intervene in Roman Storm Retrial

Over 65 cryptocurrency and blockchain companies and advocacy groups are urging former US President Donald Trump to intervene in the ongoing retrial of Roman Storm, the co-founder of Tornado Cash. The groups, including the Solana Policy Institute, Blockchain Association, and DeFi Education Fund, outlined their requests for crypto policy clarity in a letter addressed to Trump. They called on him to direct the IRS and US Treasury to clarify digital asset tax policies, protect decentralized finance (DeFi) from regulatory overreach, and encourage regulatory clarity through agencies like the SEC and CFTC. Notably, the letter explicitly asks Trump to urge the Department of Justice to dismiss all charges against Storm and support his appeal for overturning his conviction related to running an unlicensed money transmitting service. This stance aligns with their belief that Storm’s work on Tornado Cash – a widely used open-source software application – does not constitute a financial crime, echoing the view held by many of his supporters. Storm was initially convicted of charges including illegal money transmission and is currently awaiting sentencing following a jury verdict in August 2023. The Department of Justice has indicated that they oppose Storm’s motion for acquittal, raising concerns about potential legal conflict as the case moves forward.
