Malaysia Loses Billions to Illegal Cryptocurrency Mining

Illegal cryptocurrency mining in Malaysia has resulted in losses exceeding US$1 billion for the national utility, Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB). Authorities have identified over 13,800 sites illegally accessing electricity to power Bitcoin mining operations. This illicit use of power accounts for significant financial losses for TNB, with estimates reaching nearly US$1.11 billion. While Malaysia lacks specific regulations for cryptocurrency mining, authorities are tackling the issue through measures like meter audits and inspections to prevent further illegal activity. 4.6 Billion ringgit (approximately US$1.11 Billion) in overall losses have been reported, highlighting the challenge posed by unregulated crypto mining.
