The Nigerian Senate has approved a new board for the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), a move that strengthens regulatory oversight of the nation’s booming telecommunications industry. The appointments, following a successful screening process, mark a key step in ensuring stability and continuity as Nigeria navigates the digital economy’s opportunities and challenges.
The Senate confirmed Idris Ibikunle Olorunnimbe as Chairman of the NCC Board, signifying a shift in leadership direction for the commission. Alongside him, Maryam Bayi (North East), Senator Ramoni Olalekan Mustafa (South West), Ikechukwu Ugwuegede (South East), and Princess Oforitsenere Emiko and Christopher Sandy Okorie (both South South) were also approved as Non-Executive Commissioners.
This new board will work alongside the NCC’s executive leadership team, including Dr Aminu Maida (Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer – North West), Engineer Abraham Oshadami (Executive Commissioner for Technical Services – North Central), and Rimini H. Makama (Executive Commissioner for Stakeholder Management – North Central).
Together, they will tackle a range of issues facing the NCC, including expanding broadband access, strengthening consumer protection, and bolstering cybersecurity frameworks. Industry observers welcome these confirmations as crucial steps towards ensuring stability in the regulatory body.
