Samourai Wallet Founders Face Sentencing for Money Laundering Charges

U.S. prosecutors in the Southern District of New York have charged Samourai Wallet founders Keonne Rodriguez and William Lonergan Hill with soliciting criminal activity on dark web marketplaces, including describing ‘mixing’ as a method for Bitcoin money laundering. The pair have admitted to operating an unlicensed money transmission business involving illicit funds. Prosecutors are seeking a maximum five-year sentence under 18 U.S.C. §371. Authorities allege the service laundered at least $237 million between 2015 and 2024, with Rodriguez and Hill receiving approximately 246.3 BTC in fees, worth roughly $269 million today. Rodriguez is scheduled for sentencing on November 6th, followed by Hill on November 7th.
