EU Plans SEC-Style Regulator for Stocks and Crypto: One Super Authority to Rule Them All

The European Commission is proposing a revolutionary new system to bring clarity and efficiency to the EU’s financial markets. In an effort to streamline oversight of stock exchanges, crypto firms, and clearing houses across the bloc, they intend to implement a single financial supervisor modeled after the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). This move, dubbed a ‘capital market union’, would empower the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) to oversee these entities with expanded authority, aiming for greater market stability and faster cross-border transactions within the EU.
