European Central Bank Eyes 2029 Launch of Digital Euro Amid Legal Hurdles

The European Central Bank (ECB) aims to launch its digital euro by 2029, contingent on a newly established legal framework. This initiative follows a preparatory phase that began in late 2023, as ECB officials continue work on developing the central bank digital currency (CBDC). The upcoming meeting this week will focus on discussing the project further, with hopes for legislation that aligns with the central bank’s goals within the next four years. 2029 has been identified as a potential launch date by ECB member Piero Cipolloni, who expects the European Parliament to reach consensus on the digital euro by May 2026.
