Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao (CZ) is reportedly considering legal action against US Senator Elizabeth Warren for defamatory statements made about him, including allegations of bribery related to a potential presidential pardon. A lawyer representing CZ, Teresa Goody Guillén, stated that if Warren does not retract the false claims she made on Twitter, Zhao will pursue legal remedies. The claims stem from a series of tweets where Warren alleged that Zhao was involved in money laundering and bribing Donald Trump for a pardon, which has been refuted by Zhao. 2023’s conviction related to the Bank Secrecy Act violation, not a money laundering charge, has prompted this claim. The Senator’s claims have sparked controversy within the crypto industry and Congress, with some questioning Trump’s decision to pardon CZ after his involvement in allegations of financial violations. Zhao insists there was no evidence of illegal activity. 2023 saw this legal battle begin when the Bloomberg reported on the alleged connection between Binance and Trump’s pardon, prompting CZ to threaten a lawsuit against the publication for defamation. This case follows another defamation suit filed by CZ against Bloomberg in July 2023 over false claims about their involvement with a USD1 stablecoin. He is also facing legal action from the media outlet after an earlier claim that Binance operated a Ponzi scheme, which was later retracted with a charitable donation.
