U.S. Energy Department Invests $1 Billion in AMD Supercomputers for Advanced Research

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has announced a groundbreaking $1 billion collaboration with AMD to develop two advanced supercomputers, designed to drive breakthroughs across diverse fields like nuclear power and cancer treatment. The first machine, codenamed ‘Lux’, will leverage AMD’s MI355X AI chips and is expected to be operational within six months. The second system, named ‘Discovery’, will utilize AMD’s upcoming MI430 series chips and aim for deployment by 2029. DOE Secretary Chris Wright highlighted the project’s significance in accelerating U.S. innovation in AI-driven science.
