A team of researchers has uncovered a serious security vulnerability in geostationary (GEO) satellites, which are crucial for internet and communication services in remote areas. Their findings show that sensitive data from various sources – including cellular encryption keys, SMS messages, military communications, and critical infrastructure – is being broadcast unencrypted across the network. Using a consumer-grade satellite dish, researchers observed 39 GEO satellites and discovered this massive amount of sensitive information being broadcasted across the network in plain text. This vulnerability can be exploited by anyone with a few hundred dollars worth of equipment, potentially exposing vast swathes of data.
