Poland has accused Russia of utilizing cryptocurrency to fund espionage operations throughout the European Union. According to Sławomir Cenckiewicz, head of Poland’s national security agency, Russian covert operations are being financed using digital assets, including cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin. This accusation is based on intelligence suggesting that Moscow’s military intelligence agency, GRU, has been utilizing cryptocurrency for a significant portion of its financing. The report cites the involvement of GRU-linked networks in 2023 that were heavily funded with cryptocurrency. To address this challenge, Poland is enacting new legislation to tighten oversight of crypto transactions and prevent future covert funding through these channels.
