SSV Team Investigates Penalty Incidents Affecting Validators

The SSV team has released a detailed analysis of recent penalty incidents affecting validators. The monitoring system first flagged a penalty event at 11:51 UTC on Wednesday, with another larger incident impacting 39 validators approximately 90 minutes later. Investigations revealed both were caused by external factors related to the SSV protocol, specifically in regards to validator key management. The larger incident involved long-term staking service provider Ankr. The company acknowledged a maintenance configuration error resulted in validator keys being active across two different infrastructures simultaneously, leading to the penalty. Ankr swiftly shut down the affected operators and collaborated with SSV Labs to pinpoint the root cause. The smaller incident involved validators who migrated from the custodial service provider Allnodes. Although investigations are ongoing, investigators suspect that auxiliary validator settings may have played a role. SSV Labs CEO Alon Muroch stated that these incidents did not compromise the SSV protocol. Operators or stakeholders are advised to take no action as the review of logs indicates no double signing or faults on the SSV side.
