Missed Bitcoin Opportunity: $5 Billion Remains Unclaimed After Movie2K Raid

German authorities are facing criticism for missing out on potentially billions of dollars worth of Bitcoin linked to the notorious movie piracy site, Movie2K. Arkham, a crypto intelligence platform, has uncovered 45,000 BTC still in wallets belonging to Movie2K, suggesting another $5 billion could be seized and sold. While authorities previously claimed they had successfully dealt with over 50,000 BTC, recent findings by Arkham suggest more remains unclaimed. This comes as a blow after Germany’s decision to sell seized Bitcoin in batches between June and July 2024 at an average price of $57,900, netting them around $2.8 billion. Though this sale followed the initial seizure of Bitcoin from Movie2K suspects who claimed to have purchased it using proceeds from their illegal operation, the resulting value increase following a subsequent surge in Bitcoin’s market price would have seen a potentially substantial profit margin for authorities had they held onto the seized assets.
