AI-assisted tools are increasingly common, boosting efficiency across various industries. However, recent research has raised concerns about the potential impact of overreliance on artificial intelligence in healthcare. A study focusing on colonoscopies revealed a concerning trend: doctors using AI assistance during procedures may be detecting irregularities less effectively when not utilizing these tools. 1,443 patients participated in the study, with the researchers finding that endoscopists who used AI achieved a lower success rate (28.4%) in detecting potential polyps when the AI was used, dropping to 22.4% when it was not utilized, representing a 20% decrease in detection rates. Experts highlight the need for a balance between the benefits of AI and maintaining traditional medical skills that contribute to sound decision-making.
