Metaplanet Raises $1.2 Billion to Acquire Bitcoin, Driven by Japanese Economic Challenges

Japanese investment company Metaplanet announced a major fundraising of $1.2 billion through international share issuance on August 27, 2025. The firm will allocate the funds to acquire Bitcoin, with $835 million allocated specifically for this purpose. To raise capital, Metaplanet plans to issue up to 555 million new shares to institutional investors. This increase in shares will bring the company’s total outstanding shares to approximately 1.27 billion. Share pricing is scheduled for September 9-11, with payments settled immediately thereafter. 20% of proceeds will be directed to Metaplanet’s Bitcoin Income Business which leverages covered call options on its BTC holdings for revenue generation.
