Pavel Durov, CEO of messaging app Telegram, has strongly criticized the ongoing criminal investigation in France against him. He labeled the investigation as “legally and logically absurd” in a series of X posts, highlighting that his arrest was unprecedented and unfair. According to Durov, French police failed to follow proper legal processes, ignoring both French and EU laws in their pursuit of information. Durov was arrested last year at Le Bourget airport on charges including money laundering and child sexual abuse material sharing through Telegram. Despite a year since the arrest without any concrete evidence presented by authorities, he remains under investigation. His comments come amidst heightened attention towards Telegram’s relationship with the Open Network (TON), where TON token, Toncoin, holds the 21st largest market capitalization in cryptocurrencies. This incident has sparked support for Telegram from the community, especially given TON’s prominence in online financial services. Verb Technology, a company with significant ownership in TON, recently announced plans to change its name to Ton Strategy Company. Durov’s travel restrictions have also been highlighted, allowing him limited time in Dubai for family matters while facing limitations on his movements due to French court decisions. The case has sparked debates about the responsibility of online platform leaders regarding user-generated content.
