Coupang Data Breach: 33.7 Million Customers Affected

South Korea’s leading online retailer, Coupang, has confirmed a data breach impacting nearly 33.7 million customer accounts. The company revealed unauthorized access to personal information such as names, phone numbers, email addresses, shipping addresses, and order histories. This breach follows Coupang’s initial acknowledgment of approximately 4,500 compromised accounts discovered on November 18th, before the actual scope was revealed through subsequent investigations. 33.7 million users were affected by the data breach, which has led to heightened concerns about identity theft and phishing attacks. Experts warn that despite the lack of sensitive information like payment details, this stolen data could be exploited for malicious purposes. Coupang CEO Park Dae-Jun issued an apology to customers impacted, stating their commitment to resolving this situation. South Korean authorities are investigating whether Coupang violated privacy regulations during the breach. A class action lawsuit is being explored as a response by affected customers, while the Ministry of Science and ICT has formed a joint investigation team to determine the cause and identify possible violations of safety rules regarding personal data protection.
