Lazarus Group Suspected in $36M Upbit Hack, Exceeding 2019 Breach Anniversary

South Korea’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, Upbit, experienced a significant security breach where approximately $36 million in Solana-based assets were stolen. The attack occurred on November 27th, coinciding with the six-year anniversary of a previous major incident linked to Lazarus Group, a notorious North Korean hacking group. Upbit has confirmed unauthorized transfers from its hot wallet and suspended deposits and withdrawals while investigating potential entry points for the hackers. Authorities suspect the Lazarus Group was responsible, given their history of targeting crypto platforms in the past. The timing of the attack raises suspicions about deliberate choices by attackers to exploit increased media attention surrounding the upcoming merger with Naver Financial.
