New Bill Aims to Combat AI Fraud & Deepfakes with Increased Penalties

A bipartisan bill, the ‘AI Fraud Deterrence Act,’ has been introduced by Representatives Ted Lieu (D-Calif.) and Neal Dunn (R-Fla.), seeking to address the escalating use of AI in fraudulent activities. This legislation targets deepfakes, particularly those impersonating federal officials. punishments will be doubled from $1 million to $2 million for cases involving AI-facilitated fraud. The bill will also expand definitions of mail and wire fraud to include AI-mediated deception. Officials like Dunn emphasize that the law aims to protect public identities by holding individuals accountable for misuse of this technology. It’s a response to the growing sophistication of fraudulent tactics leveraging AI’s abilities. The act is further supported by experts who warn that, while existing fraud schemes have existed for centuries, AI has introduced new levels of deception due to its speed and accuracy, as detailed in the FBI’s December alert.
